Digital product passports and traceability

A product passport can provide access to product information; traceability supplies related identities, events and evidence.

Related concepts with different functions

A digital product passport is an organised way to associate and make accessible information about a product. Traceability connects identified objects to their history and relationships. A passport can reference traceability data, but the two concepts are not interchangeable.

The exact information, access model and duties depend on the relevant product framework. This page explains the system relationship and does not prescribe a universal passport field list or legal deadline.

A product page is not a complete trace

A QR code can lead to a product information page. That page may describe the product type without identifying the particular lot or item in someone’s hand. Decide what identity level the passport represents before assuming it supports an investigation.

A traceability system may maintain detailed partner and event records that should not all be public. Access to information needs to reflect the use case and the sensitivity of the data.

Connect stable identity to maintained data

Keep the link between the physical label and digital record stable across system changes. Assign responsibility for maintaining the referenced data. If a label points to an unavailable service, the physical identifier alone cannot retrieve the information.

Distinguish static product attributes from changing lifecycle records. Corrected composition information and later service events should retain enough context for readers to understand their scope.

Evaluate the evidence behind claims

A passport interface can make a claim easy to find without making it true. Preserve the source, date and verification status of important assertions. State whether information applies to all products of a type or only a specific lot.

Where legislation or a formal framework applies, verify the applicable text and product-specific rules directly. General traceability advice is not a substitute for that assessment.

Practical questions for a project

  • Which object does the passport identify?
  • Which events should it reference?
  • Which data is public, partner-only or restricted?
  • Who maintains the record after a system migration?
  • How are disputed claims corrected?

Use identity planning and data governance to establish those foundations before choosing the public interface.

Frequently asked questions

Does a QR code create traceability?

A code provides a carrier or access point for identity and information. Traceability still requires meaningful records and connected relationships behind it. A product-type webpage may not identify the individual item being scanned.

Should all traceability data be public?

No universal public-data rule is implied here. Define access according to the applicable product framework and business use case. Supplier-sensitive records, operational events and consumer-facing information may need different access levels.
